Hysterosalpingography (HSG)

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is an X-ray method of examining the uterus and oviduct using iodine contrast. It is most common in the first half of the menstrual cycle (from 1 to 14 days). The review takes about 30 minutes.

INDICATIONS / WHY IT IS DONE?

• For the purpose of examining the passage of the cervical canal cavity, the inside of the uterine cavity and the oviduin in women in the process of sterility diagnosis (examination is recommended after analyzes of hormones, spermograms, folliculometry and swabs).

• It can also be used to examine the cause of repeated abortions.

• If you are taking medication that stimulates the formation of ovulation.

HOW IT IS PERFORMED?

• The procedure is done while lying on a gynecological table. The doctor takes a speculum – a metal sterile instrument (in the form of a dagger) and carefully inserts it into the vagina. This procedure is not painful, but it may be unpleasant.

• After that the doctor cleans the cervix and introduces the catheter into the cervical channel. The speculum is removed and the patient is placed under an X-ray machine. The contrast medium is injected into the catheter and slowly the cavity of the uterus and the ova are filled with contrast. Contraceptive injection can cause cramping, and if the tubes are not passable, stretching may occur. When the uterine cavity and the ova are filled with a contrast medium, X-rays are made. Your doctor may ask you to change the position or wait 15-30 minutes to make an adequate X-ray. When the procedure is completed, the catheter is removed.
