Ultrasound of the kidneys and urinary tract

Ultrasound examination of the kidneys and urinary tract is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure which, with the help of ultrasonic waves, provides data on the size, shape and position of the kidneys and the urinary tract. The review takes about 30 minutes.

INDICATIONS – WHY IT IS DONE?

• For the purpose of assessing the size, shape and position of the kidneys and urinary tract (ureter, urinary bladder …).

• In order to detect stone (calculus) in the kidney, cysts, tumors (benign and malignant), kidney infections (localized-abscesses or kidney-infections).

• In order to detect the site and causes of urinary flow (obstruction).

• Evaluation of blood flow through the arteries and renal veins (with Doppler effect).

• Auxiliary diagnostic tool for kidney biopsy.

HOW IT IS PERFORMED?

The patient is on the bed for examination, after which the doctor puts a special gel on the surface of the ultrasound probe. The probe is a small plastic device that sends and receives ultrasonic waves and is placed on the body of a patient / patient whom the doctor wants to examine. Gel has the role of improving the conductivity of ultrasonic waves and eliminating air between the skin and the probe.

POTENTIAL RISKS

Ultrasound examination of the kidneys and urinary tract is a completely harmless, effective and painless method that does not carry any risk.

PREPARATION

• You should not eat 4 hours before checking. The last meal you will have before recording should be easy, for example. a piece of zwieback and a cup of tea.

• It is necessary to drink about 3-4 glasses of liquid (water) within half an hour for 1.5 hours before examining and then do not wet.

• It is desirable that you do not take the food that fills (beans, cabbage, peas, beans …) two to three days before the examination.

AFTER THE ULTRASOUND

After the review, you can return to your usual daily activities.
