Ergometry – cardiac stress test

Kratak opis: Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry.

Cardiac stress test (ergometry) is a procedure that determines the impact of physical activity on cardiac performance. Physical stress can lead to cardiac disorders that cannot be seen when the heart is at rest. The test takes about 30 minutes.

INDICATIONS / WHY IS IT PERFORMED?

  • In order to detect, prove and monitor coronary artery disease (narrowing of the small blood vessels of the heart (coronary arteries) that nourish the heart muscle);
  • As part of the detection and identification of cardiac arrhythmias;
  • In order to monitor the effects and success of previous treatment (therapy);

HOW IS IT PERFORMED?

  • The test is performed by patient’s walking on a treadmill or riding a bicycle. First, you will walk/cycle slowly, and as the test progresses, the speed and resistance of the bike/slope on the treadmill will increase (physical stress increases);
  • During the test, the following is monitored at all times: electrical activity of the heart (using an ECG); blood pressure value; heart rate per minute and breathing;
  • The test lasts until a certain number of heartbeats per minute is reached (a certain heart rate) or the test is interrupted at any time if you report that you cannot continue the test or have any of the following problems: chest pain, suffocation, dizziness, fainting, pounding or irregular heartbeat;

POTENTIAL RISKS

  • Very rarely, a drop in blood pressure or a heart rhythm disorder can occur.
  • It is extremely rare that a heart attack can occur.

PREPARATION

  • Do not eat, drink or smoke at least 2 hours before the test (longer recommended);
  • You can take medicines (unless your doctor tells you to temporarily skip certain medicines);
  • If you use a pump, bring it with you and tell your healthcare provider what lung disease you have;
  • Wear comfortable clothing and comfortable (sports) shoes so that you can do the test with no discomfort;

AFTER ERGOMETRY

  • You will stand for a few seconds and then take a lying position for the next 5 minutes (the electrical activity of the heart, blood pressure and heart rate per minute will be monitored at all times).
  • After the test, you can return to your normal daily activities.
